THE HOOK UP 3! Pt.1
For the third year running we find
ourselves riding through the Welsh Valleys, surrounded by the green, green
grass. This means only one thing, we’re
back at the Hook Up Chopper Show, located still at its perfect location near
Llansoy on a farm just on the edge of the Brecon Beacons.
Despite the weather, which see-sawed
between bright sunshine and heavy rain, it still proved to be the best Hook Up
yet, with tickets limited to 300 and sold out, the farms courtyard was jam
packed with the finest selection of traditional choppers the UK has to
offer. Mostly consisting of old Harleys
(Panheads, Shovelheads, Ironheads and a couple of Knuckles), they were still a
nice selection of Brit and Jap bikes of a high standard!
After an eventful night out in Cardiff the night before, we had a leisurely ride to the site from our B&B to finish setting up the show site and relax for the afternoon as we watched everyone else arrive from far and wide. It was a chance to catch up with old friends and get acquainted with new ones, something the Hook Up and the old school chopper scene is great for, no egos and posing here, everyone’s just here to party and have a good time which no one will deny they didn’t have!
So what’s new at this year’s Hook Up?! Well
Friday night was the usual party where everyone overdoes it a bit, but this
year saw no bands Friday night which actually proved to be a good move as Myia
Hancox was on hand to DJ into the early hours, keeping everyone in the main
barn dancing like their life depended on it!
Friday night also kept everyone entertained with the return of the arm
wrestling contest, with some very risqué hand grips which proved very amusing! Also new this year was the Mystical Freaks
Art Show, show casing the latest work from those Mystical chopper riders,
covering everything from photography, design and painting!
We arouse far too early on Saturday morning
feeling the repercussions of the previous night, but we had little to time
freshen up if we were to make it out on the ride out! For most this is the high light of the
weekend and saw about twice the amount of people than last year head out for
the ride around the Brecon Beacons, first stop however was Usk to fuel up, this
in itself was a sight to behold. At
least 100 vintage choppers filing into the local petrol station had all the
locals heads turning and waiting cars frustrated, we learned later that it had
made the local news boards ‘biker chaos at petrol station’!! As usual once we got going a small group had
stopped due to a break down, but the rest kept going only to get caught in the
closing rain storm, a good soaking was had but it was still a fun ride which
provided some very atmospheric shots!
